SAFE SPARRING PROTOCOL

POLICY STATEMENT

1. Sparring is recognized as an integral part of Krav Maga / Krav Maga advanced / Kick Boxing / Kick Boxing Advanced / Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training and is seen by FMC MELBOURNE as part of a progression of a student’s development.

2. Sparring must always be supervised by a recognized FMC MELBOURNE instructor.

3. It is compulsory that protective equipment must be worn at all times by practitioners during a sparring session and as a minimum is restricted to:

  • Mouth Guard
  • Minimum 16 oz or 14 oz Gloves
  • Groin guard
  • Shin guards
  • 7 oz MMA Gloves (advanced Krav Maga only)

4. Excessive or uncontrolled bleeding indicates a lack of control, defense and following instruction. The student or practitioner code of conduct applies and infection control policy must be implemented immediately

5. In event of concussion or a “knock out” the FMC MELBOURNE Sparring Safety Measures policy must be implemented immediately.

6. Sparring carries risk of infection, bodily harm, and injury. Practitioners participating in sparring sessions must be made aware of this, and acknowledge and accept this risk before participating.

 

DEFINITIONS

“Sparring” is where two or more practitioners engage in the motions or semblance of fighting, using any part of the body or a weapon, without the landing of heavy blows that might otherwise cause unnecessary bodily harm, with the intention of safely training the practitioners in timing, distancing and the use of various fighting techniques.

“Free Sparring” is sparring where the use of fighting techniques by one or more of the practitioners is not predetermined or advised. The purpose of free sparring is to test a practitioner’s ability to respond spontaneously and effectively to unforeseen attacks (self defense) or combative situations.

Free sparring requires complete and unabridged supervision of an experienced FMC MELBOURNE instructor.

“Restricted Sparring” is sparring where the use of fighting techniques by one or more of the practitioners is predetermined or advised. The purpose of restricted sparring is to test a practitioner’s ability to respond spontaneously and effectively to foreseen attacks (self defense) or combative situations.

 

FREE SPARRING RESTRICTIONS

Students and members with less than 45 hours training time under direct and qualified instructor supervision, may not participate in free sparring at all. Instructors with less than 2 years instructor time and confirmation from head instructor may not conduct free sparring at all.

 

RESTRICTED SPARRING

Restricted Sparring is restricted to specific strikes set by an authorized FMC instructor. All students must adhere to the instructors instructions and commands at all times.

 

SPARRING SUPERVISION

In all of the above forms of sparring, instructors must pay close attention to all practitioners’ ability and involvement in the instruction. Any practitioner deemed to be working outside of the boundaries set, and / or deemed struggling to keep up with the pace being set needs to be addressed immediately.

In addition to the provisions for sparring in general, and in accordance with the first aid policy, one certified instructor/assistant instructor with a Senior First Aid certificate must be present to supervise every session in any type of sparring.

Practitioners must be closely monitored to check on their physical and mental state. Particular attention to the following: Hydration, Infection Control, Pregnancy, Heat related Illness.

 

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

All participants in sparring must wear safety equipment as identified in item 3 of the Safe Sparring Policy. Failure to wear this equipment will result in immediate forfeiture of sparring.
All Safety equipment must be:

  • Proprietary based ie Not Home Made
  • Maintained and in good working order
  • Cleaned and attention to hygiene.

 

PARTICIPANT MATCHING

All sparring participants must be matched as close as possible according to age, height, weight, maturity, skill levels and experience. For training and practice sparring, participants of different age, height, weight, maturity, skill levels and experience are desirable to provide the broadest possible range of training experience.

Strict controls and supervision are required to maintain safety and prevent excessive contact.

 

ROUNDS AND TIMES

The number and duration of rounds that a practitioner is required to participate in must be adequately controlled and reflect the level of skill and experience of the practitioner.
